THROW A HOUSEWARMING PARTY — AND MAKE IT LOOK PROFESSIONALLY PUT TOGETHER

When my husband and I moved into our first home earlier this year, we had just spent a month with our in-laws while renovating. We were definitely ready to enjoy our space and we were SO excited to show off all our hard work to our friends & family! So being the party planner I am, I made it an event. And it was a huge hit! But not everyone has their personal event planner on speed dial, so I’ve gathered some tips to help you make your next move-in the soirée of the century.

decide your guest count

Housewarming parties can range in size from small family gatherings to large shindigs depending on your budget, your contact list, and the size of your space. I love a more intimate setting, so I would keep it to around 50 or fewer guests. You may be thinking Fifty?? I don’t even know fifty people, let alone like them enough to have them at my party! That’s totally fine! You can definitely have fun with a more intimate crowd. If you feel comfortable, invite some of your new neighbors. This will set the groundwork for a good relationship down the road.

choose the perfect timing

If you’re like me, you’ll want to perfect every corner of the house before you invite guests over. This is expected so pick a date several months after you unload the Uhaul.

The time of day you choose will determine your menu ( and in turn, your budget), so keep this in mind when sending out invitations. For a more informal gathering, I recommend using Evite or a similar service to invite your friends and family. It’s completely free and easy to send updates and collect RSVPs!

provide refreshments

You’ll want to provide refreshments for your guests, which can get expensive, but don’t freak out -- this is where the timing comes in handy! Hold your party in the afternoon and you can get away with appetizers. Opting for light bites also allows your guests to move around your house, so you don’t have to worry about having enough seating. Think charcuterie, veggie trays, and mini cupcakes here.

Not everyone likes to drink, but if you know your guests will, I recommend providing one choice cocktail that you can mix up in a big batch.

set the mood

Now, others may tell you to skip decorations, but I disagree! You don't have to go all out by any means, but a small DIY balloon arch or celebratory sign can spruce up your party and get everyone in the festive mood. I put one together for less than $15! We also set out photos from our wedding and wrote a welcoming note on a chalkboard to invite our guests in.

The biggest mood determiner is of course, music. Don’t forget this! I usually like to put on a playlist at least thirty or forty-five minutes before the party starts, to get myself in the spirit and to ensure it’s playing when the early birds arrive.

There you have! The most important thing to remember is to have fun. I am a chronic worrier, so I get it. You always want to make sure your guests are having a good time. But don’t forget to relax, have an ice cold beverage, and enjoy your new space with your loved ones. Happy housewarming!
